Starting in mid-2019, Hong Kong began experiencing protests and riots against the Hong Kong government. Ordinarily peaceful and prosperous, Hong Kong's political unrest took center stage in the worldwide news. Maytin Kan's daughter, Nancy Lam, and son-in-law, Kenneth Lam, as well as his granddaughter, Karen Kan, and her husband, James Gann, traveled from North America to Hong Kong for the grand opening of the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Maytin's son, Mi Ki Kan, and daughter-in-law, Susan Kan chose to remain in Canada for health reasons.
The planned museum grand opening date of November 30 2019, looked impossible as many protests were occurring behind the museum in Kowloon. Much to everyone's surprise, the riots calmed down the week the Kan "Clan" landed in Hong Kong, and the museum decided two days before the date that the grand opening was a go!
